Deputy Baker died as a result of gunshot wounds inflicted on 01/02/81 at the scene of an attempted armed robbery of a store on the far northeast side. The shooter, James Coleman, 31, then exchanged gunfire with a second deputy, Gerald Morris, and both Morris and Coleman died in the ensuing battle. An accomplice at the scene, Sanford Marshall, was not involved in the shootings; he escaped but was apprehended the next day and was convicted on several counts and given a 90 – year sentence.
